Signs It’s Time to Change Doctors

Even if your doctor admits his mistake and apologizes, you may want to switch.

"Trust your instinct," advocate Torrey advises.

"If you feel he's incompetent, leave."

Although you may be angry, you can't successfully sue unless you've been physically harmed, she says: "Emotional distress doesn't count."

6. You leave the office feeling confused and uninformed.

"Any time there's a disconnect between what you think you should have gotten and what you got, it's time to switch," advises Torrey.

You want a doctor who involves you in the process, where you feel engaged, Dr. Parks says.

"You don't want a paternalistic doctor who says, 'This is the way it is,' or who doesn't tell you his diagnosis," he notes.

That doesn't apply in an emergency. With some medical conditions, doctors may need to act quickly, and a long conversation may not be medically safe.

7. You can't get a timely appointment.

"Access is critical," says Dr. Hickson. "If you can't get in to see your doctor when you feel you need to, discuss it with your doctor."
