This week it's Fort Worth FTW, with a couple of new openings in the works and a fun monthly dining event for your calendar.
The Fort will get its own branch of Velvet Taco in January 2014, at 2700 W. Seventh St. This is the second Velvet Taco, and it will take over the space previously occupied by the Gold Standard, a tavern that closed in September after barely a year.
Del Frisco's Grille is now open in downtown Fort Worth. Chef is Russ Huey, who will execute DFG favorites such as chicken-fried rib-eye, pepper Jack tamales, flatbreads, tacos, steaks, salads, sandwiches and a mega-wine list with 500 selections. Brunch is also a big deal, because that's when the restaurant serves its red velvet Belgian waffle. The Del Frisco's Grille Fort Worth is the largest in the chain, with 10,800 square feet over two stories, an exhibition kitchen, three private dining rooms, two bars and a patio.
The first True Food Kitchen in Texas will open in Dallas on November 19, in the new Plaza at Preston Center’s University Park Library building. The restaurant, which has six locations in Arizona, California and Colorado, is known for its affiliation with kale-salad fan Dr. Andrew Weil. But the fascinating thing about it is the way it encompasses every fussy food trend of the last decade: vegan, vegetarian, organic, gluten-free, Paleo, Mediterranean diet, grass-fed beef, bison burgers, sustainably raised fish, organic milk and butter, kale, Anasazi beans, and smoothies. You name the neurotic-diner buzzword, and it's here.
Cristina's Fine Mexican Restaurant has opened at 8300 Preston Rd. in the Preston Creek Shopping Center at Preston Road and Highway 121 in Plano. Also coming to that center: another branch of Uno Due Go, the new fast casual restaurant concept from Uno Chicago Grill.
Max’s Wine Dive may specialize in fried chicken, but the chain is celebrating National Vegan Month in a big way by offering a weekly vegan dish throughout November. Stop in for vegan mushroom risotto, vegan chili, vegan spaghetti and meatballs, and vegan chiles rellenos. Max's also has some fun new dishes for fall, including deep-fried pork shank, peanut butter and jelly egg rolls with veal sweetbreads, tuna with pomegranate molasses, and chicken-fried Brussels sprouts.
Five Sixty by Wolfgang Puck is now open Sunday nights, making it seven nights a week. And while we're at Reunion Tower, the new private dining service at Cloud Nine Cafe is available for group reservations and private events. Options include boxed lunches or a buffet.
And, finally, back to Fort Worth: Sera Dining & Wine is starting monthly Sunday suppers with a family-style menu that varies each month. Last Sunday it was a buffet of three different paellas. November's Sunday supper is on November 17 and will adopt the style of a "traditional Basque country cider house."
