A popular diabetic-friendly nutritional plan is more effective for weight loss than many traditional diets, one study found. Conducted by Australian researchers and published in the Archives of Internal Medicine, the study focused on the benefits of the low-glycemic diet.
Popular for years in parts of Europe, and sometimes referred to as the Mediterranean diet[1], low-glycemic eating focuses on foods that do not cause a significant increase in blood sugar levels.
Typical staple foods include whole grains, olives, lean protein sources such as chicken breast, and certain berries and other fruits that do not cause sugar spikes.
Researchers in the study found that dieters who followed a low-glycemic plan for 12 weeks lost significantly more weight – 4%-6% of body mass – than those who followed a low-fat or low-carb approach.
