Smoothie Saturday: ‘Rise-N-Shine’ with Chia, Mango and Goldenberries

Welcome to our 20th Smoothie Saturday[1], where we bring you new recipes for healthful blender concoctions every weekend.

This week's recipe comes from Superfoods for Life: Chia[2], by dietitian and health coach Lauri Boone[3], R.D. (Fair Winds Press, 2014).

Chia seeds are "high in protein, fiber, minerals and essential fatty acids, [and] pack a nutritional punch," Boone says. "Just a spoonful adds a shot of nutrition to drinks, salads and soups."

In addition to explaining how chia seeds and sprouts can contribute to better health, Boone serves up 75 recipes for all kinds of dishes and drinks in her latest book.

Today, Boone is sharing her Rine-N-Shine Smoothie recipe, which she calls "sunshine in a glass." It includes plenty of the antioxidant vitamins C and A, and one ingredient, goldenberries, "are also packed with energy-yielding B-complex vitamins," she says.

You might have to search for goldenberries at your favorite health-food market, since they're not yet readily available at most chain grocery stores.

"A few pinches of turmeric pump up the flavor and the pain- and inflammation-reducing power … and may even enhance brainpower and mood," Boone explains.

Rise-N-Shine Smoothie

  • 1-1/2 cup (355 ml) freshly squeezed orange juice
  • 2 cups (350 g) frozen mango chunks
  • ½ cup (60 g) dried goldenberries
  • 2 teaspoons chia seeds
  • A few pinches of ground turmeric, to taste

Combine the orange juice, mango, goldenberries and chia seeds in a high-speed blender and blend until smooth. Pour into 1 or 2 glasses and sprinkle with a few pinches of turmeric. Serves 1 to 2.
