A study found that people with type 2 diabetes who quaffed one drink a day had the lowest heart disease death rate.
The study followed 983 type 2 diabetics – comprised of both drinkers and non-drinkers – and found that teetotalers had a higher death rate from heart disease than their moderately drinking peers.
Alcohol can have many side effects, including hypoglycemia, addiction and a worsening of blood fat levels, so drink in moderation.
Doctors recommend one drink per day; any more than that may cause health problems.
Stay away from sugary mixed drinks and opt for beer or cocktails mixed with club soda.
Other studies have supported the benefits of red wine in helping type 2 diabetes patients metabolize sugars and starches properly.
