The rate of end-stage kidney failure is increasing nationwide, spurred in part by a skyrocketing epidemic of obesity and type 2 diabetes. That was the key finding of one European study.
Conducted by Norwegian researchers at St. Olav University, the study estimated that overall the risk that patients with chronic kidney disease will progress to kidney failure is 2.5 times higher in the U.S. than in Norway.
A key factor, researchers argued, was the significantly higher rates of obesity, type 2 diabetes and high blood pressure among American adults.
The study's authors recommended that adults experiencing impaired kidney function receive early referral to kidney specialists to ward off potential end-stage disease later.
