How to Raise a Teen Who Has ADHD Symptoms

What should parents do when it comes to their teens' ADHD medication?
Take your teen to regular doctor's appointments to ensure that their medication is the right kind and dosage, advises Sleeper-Triplett.

You'll also have to monitor teens to make sure they're taking their medication as prescribed. Some teenagers with ADHD may resent having to take medication, and may skip doses or stop taking it, she explains.

"ADHD teens who are depressed and not properly medicated will seek ways to self-medicate," Sleeper-Triplett warns.

What's the best thing parents can do to help their ADHD teenager?
"Have patience, communicate and listen to your teen," Jaksa advises.

"They don't like to be bossed around, dictated to or nagged at," he says. "Engage them in a two-way conversation and focus on solutions, not problems."

So when your ADHD teen brings up a problem, especially if they seem angry or frustrated about it, listen carefully.

Then say something like, "This solution will help for this problem, for this reason," Jaksa says.

After that, give them as much time as they need to think about it. They'll probably decide you were right, he says.
