The hormone responsible for curbing appetite could also help keep diabetics from producing excess insulin, a University of Florida study found.
Published in the journal Peptides, the study used gene therapy advancements in hopes of treating type 2 diabetes.
In tests conducted on laboratory mice with type 2 diabetes, researchers found that injections of the hormone leptin helped stabilize abnormal insulin levels.
Leptin was even found to help combat the diabetes-worsening effects of a fatty diet.
Produced by the brain's hypothalamus gland, leptin is responsible for creating feelings of satiety and signaling a decrease in appetite to the body.
