Are You a Binge Eater?

"This isn't a weight issue – it's a mental-health issue," Turner says. "Binge eating disorder is a behavior disorder that's deeply entrenched in emotions, so the cornerstone of treatment is therapy."

But to get that treatment, you need to understand your condition. Read on for 8 clues that you may be a binge eater and should seek help.

Red flag #1: You binge at least once a week.

Frequently consuming large amounts of calories in a certain amount of time is a primary indication of binge eating disorder.

"For example, eating 10,000 calories within two hours would qualify as bingeing," Dr. Marx says.

And if you do this at least once a week for three months, you likely fit the diagnosis for the condition, he explains.

Red flag #2: You eat when you're not hungry.

People with binge eating disorder use food as a kind of drug, rather than to stave off hunger.
