Maintaining eye health and good vision are major concerns for many type 2 diabetics, says one study.
Type 2 diabetes is responsible for a majority of the most common form of glaucoma nationwide, according to research published in the journal Ophthalmology.
Based on data from more than 76,000 adult patients, the study estimated that 60%-70% of diagnoses of primary open-angle glaucoma, or POAG, are directly linked to type 2 diabetes.
Researchers found that diabetics were significantly more likely to develop POAG even when other factors such as smoking, alcohol intake and a family history of glaucoma were taken into account.
