Artificial Sweeteners Lead to Higher Blood Alcohol

Go easy on those artificial sweeteners! Although research has shown that sweeteners such as aspartame and sucralose can help avoid wide fluctuations in blood sugar, one study raised questions about the effects of artificial sweeteners in alcoholic beverages.

According to research published in the journal Digestive Disease Week, artificial sweeteners may bring about higher rates of alcohol absorption, leading to higher overall blood alcohol levels than identical drinks made with sugar mixes. The study's authors believe that the higher blood alcohol absorption results from the tendency of artificial sweeteners to speed up emptying of the stomach. Tests showed that men who consumed a vodka drink mixed with artificial sweetener experienced nearly a 30% faster rate of stomach emptying than those subjects who drank the same quantity of vodka flavored with a sugar-based mix.
