Q&A - How Do I Adjust to My Chronic Illness?

Q: My relationship ended because of my COPD. I can't go back, yet I can't accept my present life limitations. Any advice?

-Penny K.

A: Hi Penny,

I'm sorry to see you feeling so lost and confused; I hope I can be of some help. First, let me educate those reading this. Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) affects more than 24 million people in the United States and is a term used to describe a lung condition that interferes with one's ability to breathe normally. It includes emphysema, asthma and bronchitis. Smoking is the leading cause of COPD and, unfortunately, there is no cure. Learning to cope with it and minimize its effects is the key to managing life with it. So what can you do when you have this diagnosis and are having trouble accepting it and living with it?

Since I don't know the specifics of your situation, Penny, I suggest that you call the COPD Foundation's information line, (866) 316-2673. It's staffed by COPD patients and caregivers and is an excellent contact for support and direction. They'll also help you find resources in your area. The staff will help you deal with the physical and relational complications associated with this disease.

Wishing You Great Health,
Dr. John H. Sklare
