Rick Warren’s Secret to Losing Weight on the Daniel Plan

But earlier that year, tragedy struck Warren's family: His 27-year-old son, Matthew, took his own life April 5. Matthew had battled mental illness since childhood.

"It was the day I prayed would never happen, and the day I feared would," Warren says.

"It was the toughest year of my life," Warren says, so he took time off to heal. Now, a year later, he's back behind Saddleback's pulpit.

In this exclusive Lifescript interview, Warren reveals how his congregation rallied to him after Matthew's death, describes his own struggle with weight, and explains how the Daniel Plan works.

What's the theory behind the Daniel Plan?
[We want to help people change] in seven key areas: spiritual, physical, mental, emotional, relationships, finances and work.

You might expect the church to begin with the spiritual, but we actually start with the physical – because that affects everything else.

I've been a pastor in Orange County for 33 years now, and I've helped a lot of people make changes in their lives.

What I've discovered is that people just don't have the energy to change. They [say], "I want to work on my marriage; I want to work on my career; I'd like to stop some bad habits."

[But what actually happens is] you come home at night, and you're worn out, flop down on the couch and watch TV instead.
