Cindy McCain's Battle With Chronic Migraines

Did your kids understand what was happening?
No, they didn't get it when they were younger; I had trouble putting my pain into words.

It wasn't until they were older that they got how bad it was.

It was the first time they had seen the non-headache side effects, like nausea and temporarily losing my sight in one eye.

Now that my kids are older [Meghan, 27; Jack, 25; Jimmy, 23; and Bridget, 20], they're very protective and want to take care of me.

How should women explain migraines to their children?
It's best if mothers can figure out a way to [do it] without scaring them.

Use household analogies to help them understand.

With my boys, it's always an analogy relating to the military. Jack is a naval officer who followed in the footsteps of his father, grandfather and great-grandfather. Jimmy serves in the Marine Corps.

My sons say, "Someone splits your head open with an ax, throws in some razor blades and gunpowder, and sews it up and lights it."
