Parenting Tips for Preschoolers With ADHD

"Kids actually enjoy yoga, martial arts and [activities] like that, which help them focus on what their body is doing … [and in turn] trains the mind to focus," Dr. Rosenblatt notes.

So kids become calmer during and immediately after exercise, because they aren't concentrating on thoughts that trigger hyperactivity or impulsivity, he says.

Although organized sports or classes help, parents are encouraged to engage their ADHD children in activities at home too; for example, racing around the block, playing in a nearby park, using a movement-based video game or doing simple calisthenics in the living room, he adds.

ADHD parenting tip: Encourage creative play.
Give ADHD children art supplies and common household items that help foster their imagination. For example, they could color the insides of cardboard egg cartons or make a doll bed out of an oatmeal box.

Dr. Rosenblatt also recommends toys that allow a child to create something – for example, crayons, pencils or paints, or building supplies such as small boxes, blocks, Legos, Tinker Toys or Lincoln Logs.
