The Power of Pets

Our pets are important parts of our lives. While I currently have a pet-free home, I've had pets most of my life and know firsthand the positive aspects of having them.

When it comes to the most popular pets in the U.S., not surprisingly, dogs and cats top the list. According to the Humane Society, there are approximately 78.2 million pet dogs in the U.S., and about 39% of households own at least one. There are approximately 86.4 million pet cats, and about 33% of all households own at least one. An estimated 63% of American households have at least one pet, according to the American Pet Products Manufacturers Association.

It's safe to say that we Americans love our pets and that we have a special relationship with animals. I started thinking about this while listening to a psychiatrist talking about the emotional benefits of pet ownership. He was responding to a woman who wondered if it was normal that when she was upset she didn't want any people around her. She only wanted her beloved dog near her.

He thought that was perfectly normal because of the emotional benefits of having a pet. There's just something deep, personal and special about the emotional relationship we have with our pets that's different from the way we relate to other humans.
