If you have diabetes and are thinking of starting a family, you may have been told that the risk of having a child with birth defects is high. Not always, according to the American Diabetes Association.
The crucial factor is your blood glucose level: If levels are high during conception and the critical first eight weeks of pregnancy, the risk of birth defects and miscarriage in the first trimester can be as high as 65%. Common birth defects involve the heart, skeletal and nervous systems.
But if you keep blood glucose levels normal before and during the early weeks of pregnancy, research shows the risk of fetal birth defects is similar to the normal population.
If you plan to become pregnant, see your doctor to map out a healthy approach to controlling your blood glucose levels and delivering a healthy baby.
