Irritated by Your Dry Eyes?

Will it harm your eyes?
It's not contagious and it won't damage your eyesight. But it can be uncomfortable and blur your vision temporarily. It also may cause inflammation of the eye tissue.

How is it treated?
There are different types of blepharitis: one in which your eyelids stick together, and another in which you have crust around your eyelashes. The treatment depends on which type of blepharitis you have.

Generally, keep your lids clean. Warm compresses work to loosen the coating in your lashes.

You can use artificial tears to lubricate your eyelids. And stop wearing contact lenses and eye makeup while undergoing treatment.

Even after it's treated, it can return.

Should you worry if you see spots known as "floaters"?
Floaters are small, cloudy specks in the fluid in the back of your eyes. They're usually harmless and require no treatment. But they may also occur from injuries or eye disease.

At what age do they usually appear?
Floaters often show up in your 30s, but they're more common when you're older. As you age, the gel in the eye shifts and changes composition; [then] the floaters you see look like spider webs.

Can you ignore them?
See an eye doctor when you first get one – you need an exam to rule out a retinal hole [small tear in the retina, the tissue at the back of the eye]. That can cause a retinal detachment, an emergency situation when the retina separates from the blood vessels that give it oxygen. The result can be a loss of vision, so prompt evaluation is important.
