A variety of healthy foods is important for a good diet, so portion control is everything, says Lifescript Nutrition Expert Jill Weisenberger, M.S., R.D., C.D.E.
What's the best way to control your portions?
"Start by digging out your measuring cups," she says.
It's important to know exact measurements, Weisenberger says, and measuring cups can help you learn what a half-cup of rice is supposed to look like.
Once you've gotten used to the visual cues, you'll better gauge portions even when you're out and about and don't have your measuring cups with you.
Every few months, however, it's important to go back to those measuring cups and do a few sample sizings, recommends the American Diabetes Association (ADA). It's common to let the visual cues grow, says the ADA, and you want to make sure you're keeping yourself honest.
