Q: Since going through a recent health scare (it turned out my condition is treatable), I'm anxious and thinking every day about dying. I'm 68 years old. Will this be my mind-set until I die?
-Mary G.
A: Hi Mary,
I'm sorry to read about your health scare, but pleased to see that it turned out to be treatable. A close call with death or life-changing illness or injury has a way of staying with you, and I believe that's why you are feeling anxious about it. It's hard to see the world the same way once you've come face-to-face with your own mortality. What you describe is called a wake-up call! These calls come to us in many forms and they have a way of shaking you up.
Since you said that this was a recent event, I don't believe your fixation and anxiety about it will last forever. I'm guessing that you're still reeling from this. I'm reminded of the typical driver who gets a ticket for speeding. For the next few weeks the driver tends to be cautious and mindful of their speed until the emotions and memories attached to getting that ticket subside. The driver then resumes their normal driving habits.
I think that the simple passage of time will most likely bring you the emotional relief that now eludes you. However, if your anxiety is so high that it significantly interferes with your life, I suggest that you speak with a counselor about your feelings.
Wishing You Great Health,
Dr. John H. Sklare
