The reasons for pursuing a vegetarian diet vary from person to person and culture to culture. Ethical and moral qualms about animal treatment carry the day for some, while others pursue vegetarianism strictly for health benefits.
For those who suffer from or are at risk for diabetes, one study suggested that cutting out animal-based foods may just be the way to go.
Published in the journal Diabetes Care, the study concluded that patients who followed a strictly plant-based diet were able to lower their blood sugar and lose weight more effectively than those who followed more standard diabetic-friendly diets, which emphasize fresh produce but also include some meat and dairy.
After 22 weeks on the vegan diet, 43% of patients were able to lower their dosage of blood sugar medications or stop taking them altogether.
