How can you tell if you're just a bit blue or truly depressed?
People with diabetes are much more likely to be depressed, and the consequences can be severe, says the American Diabetes Association (ADA): Depression can make it harder to manage your blood sugar.
Being sad is normal. But if your sadness lasts almost all day and at least two weeks – or you have lost interest in most things you used to enjoy – you could be suffering from depression.
Other signs of depression:
- Trouble concentrating and making decisions
- Feeling hopeless
- Feeling bad about yourself
- Thoughts of dying
- Trouble sleeping
- Big changes in appetite and weight
There are treatments for depression that work for people with diabetes. If you feel you might be depressed, be sure to talk to your health-care provider.
