Studies have shown that losing weight through exercise and a calorie-restricted diet can improve a diabetic's overall health and blood sugar control. But how much calorie restriction is enough, and which exercises are best for burning calories?
The American Diabetes Association recommends creating about a 500-calorie deficit per day. As far as exercise is concerned, moderate-intensity activities that involve a fuller range of physical motion tend to be more optimal calorie-burners.
For example, a 170-pound adult who engages in 30 minutes of aerobic dance will burn about 230 calories. That same adult would burn only 155 calories biking for 30 minutes.
Activities such as tennis (270 calories per half hour), leisurely swimming (230 calories) and lawn-mowing (215 calories) are also highly recommended.
