Diabetes Raises Kidney Stone Risk

People with diabetes are more likely than their non-diabetic peers to suffer from kidney stones, according to a Mayo Clinic study.

Published in the American Journal of Kidney Disease, the study was based on 3,500 patients who were monitored over the course of 20 years. Researchers concluded that those subjects with diabetes suffered 40% more uric acid kidney stones and 9% more calcium stones as a result.

Other public-health surveys have indicated that the incidence of kidney stones is on the rise both nationally and globally.

In this study, researchers suggest that the global diabetes epidemic may be partly to blame.
