Diabetic Women Face Hip Fracture Risk

Women who are diagnosed with type 1 or type 2 diabetes should be monitored for their hip fracture risk and offered treatments to help prevent a fracture from occurring. That's the key finding of a study published in the journal Diabetes Care.

Researchers from Harvard University and other universities analyzed health data collected from more than 100,000 women over the course of two decades.

Based on their findings, researchers concluded that the risk of hip fracture was up to six times higher among type 1 diabetic women than their non-diabetic peers.

For type 2 diabetic women, the risk of hip fracture was found to be twice as high as the general female population. The study's authors planned further research on the role of insulin treatments in hip fracture risk.
