Are you a pet owner? A 2012 survey from the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) of more than 50,000 households shows that 62% of all American households, or 72.9 million homes, own a pet.
If you're among them, statistics also reveal that you probably own a dog or cat; they're the two most popular pets in America. (The study's results can be found in the 2012 U.S. Pet Ownership and Demographics Sourcebook[1].)
In fact, 36.5% of all American households own dogs compared to 30.4% of American households with cats. However, cats get the last laugh, as they win the overall numbers game.
The average number of dogs is 1.6 per home or 70 million in total; the average number of cats is 2.1 per home or 74.1 million in total. As you can see, these numbers give our feline friends a bit of an edge regarding population.
Today I'd like to talk about pet ownership and the meaning, value and role that our pets play in our lives. After a tough day, few things improve your mood faster than walking into your home and interacting with your loving pet.
