Letters from the Heart The First Step Toward Better Heart Health

If you don't understand what you need to change, you won't be able to change.

People fear heart disease, but most people think that they eat a passably healthy diet and get enough exercise.

Even those who suspect they might not eat well or exercise enough often don't think they need to do anything about it.

However, as a cardiologist, I see people who were blindsided by heart disease. I see the surprise heart attacks. The shocking cholesterol numbers. The skyrocketing blood pressure. These things don't happen out of nowhere.

So, in an attempt to help people understand what they're actually eating and how much they're actually moving, I incorporated the concept of a heart book into my practice.

A heart book is a journal in which you write down everything you eat – even the tastes while cooking, the last few bites of your kids' food, that one little cookie – and exactly how much exercise you do – how long you walked, how vigorously you rode your spin bike, how many sit-ups you did.
