Pedometers May Help People With Pre-diabetes

Using a pedometer for a half-hour daily for a year can significantly lower a person's chance of developing diabetes, reports a U.K. study.

The study was conducted on those with pre-diabetes – a condition in which a person's blood glucose levels are higher than normal, but not yet high enough to be classified as diabetes. Many people with pre-diabetes go on to develop the disease.

The 98 participants were divided into three groups: one received a leaflet about diabetes; one received a three-hour education session on diabetes; and the third group received a three-hour seminar plus the pedometer and instructions on using it for 30 minutes a day.

The pedometer group experienced the highest decline in blood sugar levels after a year – 15% – and did not go on to develop diabetes when the year was over. There were no significant falls in blood sugar levels in either of the two other groups.

The research team concluded that if members of the pedometer-using group continue their efforts, their chance of developing diabetes will be cut in half.

One of the researchers said that the pedometers might motivate people to exercise more, which can reduce the risk of pre-diabetes developing into diabetes and prevent complications for those who have diabetes, including heart disease, stroke, kidney failure, blindness and amputation.

The study was reported in the Telegraph U.K.
