Angioplasty Recovery: 10 Exercise Tips (and One Surprise!)

For example, use your lunch hour for a brisk walk with co-workers before you eat. (Bonus: Exercise may reduce your appetite, so you might find yourself enjoying smaller, smarter portions.)

6. Think aerobic.
Choose activities that involve large muscle groups and can be done continuously, for example, walking, cycling and swimming.

"Aerobic exercise is the best form of exercise post-angioplasty," Dr. Whiteson says. "It improves all the risk factors for atherosclerosis, trains the peripheral muscles and strengthens without overtaxing the heart."

Note: Anaerobic (resistance exercise, also called strength training or weight training) can put significant strain on the heart and should be avoided after an angioplasty.

7. Wear a pedometer.
Wearing this step-counting device can motivate you to move more and sit less, according to a 2013 Indiana University study.

Health experts urge people to take at least 10,000 steps a day (about five miles) to maintain good health. If you're worried about your cardiac health, heart rate monitors on pedometers can reassure you that it's doing fine as long as it doesn't jump too high for too long during your workout.

8. Make exercise stick.
The key is creating a regimen that you'll commit to. Recruit your neighbor as your walking buddy so that you feel accountable to someone else. Or enroll in a swim class at your local Y. Bonus: You'll be too busy having a good time or chatting to fear having another heart event.
