People with diabetes often have challenges with their feet due to diabetic nerve damage and poor circulation. That's why it's critical for diabetics to take care of their tootsies. Here are some tips to keep your feet in tiptop shape:
- Cut or file toenails with the shape of the toe, smoothing all sharp edges.
- Moisturize dry skin with a good lotion to prevent cracks and the opportunity for infection.
- Wear well-fitting socks without a thick toe seam, made of a material that wicks moisture away from the skin (acrylic and cotton or wool blend work well).
- Wear shoes at home.
- Wear well-fitting soft leather or fabric shoes, such as running shoes. Check them daily for cracks, pebbles or other things that might damage your feet.
- Look at and touch your feet every day; tops, bottoms, backs, sides and between the toes. Get prompt medical attention for any problems.
