Lupus and Pregnancy: A ‘Miracle Baby’

Lupus, a chronic autoimmune disease, makes a successful pregnancy challenging. But Terri Seymour, an entertainment reporter, has the opposite experience. Here she tells how she deals with her lupus and pregnancy and the "very silly" thing she did…

Most mothers-to-be are conscientious about nutrition and health, but "Extra" correspondent Terri Seymour had something else to consider: systemic lupus, a chronic autoimmune disease. The body's immune system attacks its tissues and organs, affecting the skin, joints, kidneys, brain, and other organs.

Because of lupus and a related condition she'd had, Seymour says she'd been told that she'd be unlikely to conceive.

But now she's due to deliver her "miracle baby" – a girl – any day now, with boyfriend Clark Mallon.

When she became pregnant, the longtime entertainment TV reporter feared her lupus, which has been in remission, would flare up, causing complications, such as miscarriage, hypertension, slow fetal growth and early delivery.

Speaking to Lifescript while she was 8½ months into her pregnancy, Seymour shares how she handles lupus, which she has had for 18 years, and pregnancy.
