When Mark Ballas started getting winded during his dance routines, he realized his decade-plus smoking habit was harming his health. Find out how the "Dancing With the Stars" performer kicked the habit, and why he's breathing easier today...
When Mark Ballas competes on "Dancing with the Stars," he burns up the dance floor with boundless energy.
But not long ago, the professional hoofer discovered he was losing his stamina. At age 27, he was feeling the effects of a longtime smoking habit.
Ballas had smoked since his teen years in England. Cigarettes were "just a part of life," he says, even though he knew that smoking causes serious lung problems, including chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) – a progressive condition that makes breathing difficult.
Smokers are 12 to 13 times more likely than nonsmokers to die of COPD, according to the American Lung Association.
When Ballas' energy started to suffer, he realized he was endangering not only his health but also his future as a dancer. That's when he made quitting the habit a priority.
"The level of exertion and power that I want to put into my art was enough for me to say, 'Yeah, I've got to kick this,' " he explains.
