The Best Way to Wash Your Feet

When you have diabetes, you always want to take special care of your feet to avoid lacerations that can lead to ulcers and, ultimately, amputation if not treated properly.

So what's the best way to wash your feet? Are special foot baths necessary?

Wash your feet in the bathtub or shower, in warm (not too hot) water, says the American Diabetes Association (ADA). Here are additional tips:

  • Test the temperature with your elbow, not your toes, to avoid burns.
  • If you have dry skin, try a moisturizing soap to avoid cracked skin. Soap that's not milled is more moisturizing. (Milling removes glycerin to make the soap harder and easier to shape.)
  • Special foot baths aren't necessary, although use them if you want to. Some have heating and vibrating features that are fine to use, the ADA says.
  • If you don't have access to a shower or bath, use a plastic or metal tub.
  • After cleaning your feet, be sure to rinse them well.
  • Dry thoroughly, especially between the toes, to avoid fungus or infection. It's best to pat your feet dry to avoid irritating the skin.
