People who ate a diet with lots of fruits, vegetables and fish were less likely than others to experience a heart attack, heart failure or stroke, according to a study of 31,000 people with a history of heart disease or organ damage from diabetes.
It's also smart to cut back on sugar and starch, which increase blood levels of triglycerides[2] (a type of fat that raises heart-disease risk), Dr. Goldberg says.
Fact or fiction? Stressed-out people are more prone to heart attacks.
Fact: Controlling chronic stress is important to your ticker, Dr. Mieres says.
Men and women who reported high stress levels were more than twice as likely than others to have a heart attack, according to an 18-year study published in the European Heart Journal in 2013.
To relieve stress, start with 10 minutes of quiet time a day, Dr. Mieres suggests.
"You could do yoga[3] or meditation, listen to your favorite music, take deep breaths, or close your eyes and do guided imagery[4]," she says.
"Walking[5] or other exercise can also help you clear your mind and lower your stress levels," she adds.
