As most women near menopause, excess weight starts to build around the middle. This stubborn fat can be tough to banish, and diets tried in the past may not work anymore.
That's because shedding pounds after menopause is harder than it was in your 20s or 30s.
Blame your metabolism, which changes as you age, explains Adrienne Youdim, M.D., Medical Director, Cedars-Sinai Weight Loss Center in Los Angeles.
Changes in estrogen and other hormones that may once have kept you from packing on pounds affect the body's fat storage, she says.
Also, you may have been more physically active and had more muscle mass when you were younger.
"As people get older, they tend to be more sedentary," Dr. Youdim says.
But those aren't reasons to sit back and just accept weight gain as a part of aging. It's important to shed excess weight, especially around the belly, because it reduces the risk of a variety of health conditions, including diabetes, heart disease and breast cancer, Dr. Youdim says.
